Tennis Elbow Causes and Symptoms

Learn the causes and symptoms of tennis elbow, a common overuse injury causing outer elbow pain, grip weakness, and forearm discomfort.

Tennis elbow is a painful condition that occurs when the tendons and muscles that attach to the bony area on the outside of the elbow become inflamed. Despite its name, it doesn’t only affect tennis players, although it is one of the most common injuries endured by those athletes. Any activity that requires repetitive arm, wrist, or elbow movement may result in tennis elbow, as the repetitive motion stresses the tendons and causes inflammation.

Tennis elbow generally affects a person’s dominant arm, but it can occur in either or both arms depending on what is causing the condition.

Symptoms of the condition include:- Pain on the outside, bony part of the elbow. It may occur suddenly but is more likely to gradually worsen over time. The area may also be tender to the touch.- Pain worsens when squeezing an object with the affected arm or when turning the wrist abruptly (such as when opening a jar).- A weakened grip of the hand on the affected arm.

Who’s most at risk for tennis elbow?

According to this review, 3% of the population experiences tennis elbow, with the highest rates among men and women aged 40-50. Of course, a person’s daily activity and profession play a big part in whether or not they’ll experience the symptoms of tennis elbow. As stated above, tennis players and other athletes who participate in sports that require repetitive motion of the hands and arms are at higher risk. Additionally, a study published by the American Journal of Sports Medicine found that the following professions have the highest incidence of tennis elbow:

Avoid Skiing and Snowboarding Injuries this Winter.

Learn how to avoid skiing and snowboarding injuries this winter with practical tips on preparation, protective gear, and recognising common sports injuries.

          1) Prepare your body for the season

One of the biggest mistakes that skiers and snowboarders make is jumping right back into the sport after an off-season of not much physical activity. If you spent most of the summer counting down the days until you could get back out onto the slopes and not doing much else, it’s a good idea to ease back into the sport. Don’t start with an entire day at the ski hill; this will stress the muscles that you haven’t used since last winter and that could lead to injury (the last thing that you want on week one of the season.)

          2) Wear the proper protective gear

A helmet is one of the most important pieces of equipment that you can take to the ski hill. Head injuries are, unfortunately, common among skiers and snowboarders. In fact, according to recent studies, they account for about 20% of all skiing and snowboarding injuries. Wearing a helmet will go a long way in ensuring that you don’t end up in that boat. Additionally, a lot of skiers and snowboarders wear body armor for extra protection, and ensuring that your bindings and skis or board fit you properly will help to prevent injury as well.

          3) Be aware of common injuries for skiers and snowboarders

If you know the injuries that skiers and snowboarders commonly sustain, you’ll be better equipped to identify those injuries if they pop up. For skiers, ACL and hand injuries are common. Snowboarders are more likely to injure their wrist or ankle and frequently suffer from shoulder dislocations. Both skiers and snowboarders can fall victim to lower back, knee, and muscle strains and pulls.

Orthopaedic Research UK announces £140,000 investment in biotech startup

Orthopaedic Research UK announces a £140,000 investment in Renovos, supporting breakthrough regenerative technology to improve bone healing and orthopaedic outcomes.

Orthopaedic Research UK (ORUK) has announced that biotech startup, Renovos, will receive the first investment from its newly launched the Ronald Furlong Fund, a partnership between ORUK and HS., established this year in memory of the charity’s founder.

The announcement comes after a national competition, during which, startups were put through their paces by leading healthtech experts, HS., and a final decision made by the ORUK scientific and investment committees.

The £140,000 investment will support the biotech entrepreneurs in solving a key unmet need for patients with painful and debilitating bone and joint conditions.

Renovos, a regenerative medicine company, has now raised £700k to date and is a pioneer of new nanoclay gel technology RenoviteTM, which has the potential to transform orthopaedic surgery. The gel allows a 100x lower dose of powerful regenerative therapeutic agent to be precisely delivered and localised to the sites where needed, and early trial data demonstrates that it contributes to improved bone healing. This consequently offers a step-change improvement in safety,

and ease of use, as well as reduced adverse events and complications compared with current orthopaedic interventions.

ORUK is one of the first UK charities to invest in promising technology startups following a growing trend in the US. Previously the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation invested into a small biotech firm, later enabling the charity to deploy the investment returns into more initiatives to support and improve the lives of people living with the condition.

Dr Arash Angadji, CEO of ORUK said:

"We are the first charity supporting start-ups with a focus on musculoskeletal health in the UK. The Ronald Furlong Fund initiative will play an important role in assisting entrepreneurs and innovators to quickly turn ideas into reality, with measurable benefits for the entire healthcare ecosystem.

Effective collaboration with HS. was instrumental in identifying Renovos and their exciting technology, and I am delighted to welcome them as ORUK’s first investment.”

Professor Richard OC Oreffo, Founder and CSO of Renovos said:

"We are delighted to receive support from ORUK, which will aid the development of our next generation orthopedic regenerative medicine solutions, harnessing nanoclay gels to deliver bone forming agents safely and cost effectively.

The partnership will significantly enhance Renovos’ ability to further develop innovative technologies to support the ageing population as well as younger, active individuals.”

Renovos’ RenoviteTM is underpinned by decades of pre-clinical research at the University of Southampton and Professor Peter J.S. Smith, Director, Institute for Life Sciences, University of Southampton has praised the innovation for its potential to create positive impact for patients and health systems of the future.

With an ultimate vision of pain-free movement for all, ORUK will continue to search for and invest in promising start-ups, to support the creation of cutting-edge solutions that will benefit those living with debilitating bone and joint conditions.
